Kohlrabi Greenhouse Study Finds Alternative to Mineral Fertilizer
Researchers at the Leibniz Institute for Horticultural Sciences (IGZ) have made significant findings in their study on the use of human excreta-derived fertilizers in kohlrabi production. The study, led by Caroline Ganglo and Stefan Karlowsky, aimed to determine whether these fertilizers can effectively replace mineral fertilizers in kohlrabi cultivation. The investigation, part of the Horizon Europe Innovation Action "P2GreeN," sought to explore the potential for circular nutrient flows and resilient local food production.
According to the study, published in Frontiers in Environmental Science, the results indicate that a transition to using human excreta-derived fertilizers is possible without compromising food security. The researchers found that kohlrabi grown using nitrified urine fertilizer and fecal compost showed comparable plant nitrogen uptake and soil nitrogen fluxes to those grown with traditional mineral fertilizers. This breakthrough suggests that alternative fertilizers could provide a sustainable solution for local food production, reducing reliance on mineral fertilizers and promoting a more circular approach to nutrient management.
