Ketogenic Diet Shows Promise in Treating Psychotic Disorders
A groundbreaking randomized controlled trial (RCT) published today in *Schizophrenia Bulletin* explores the efficacy of a ketogenic diet in managing psychotic disorders, offering the first clinical evidence of its potential benefits for individuals with schizophrenia-spectrum or bipolar 1 disorders. Conducted by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), the study demonstrates that a ketogenic diet—a high-fat, low-carbohydrate regimen—can yield rapid metabolic improvements compared to standard dietary practices. The trial’s initial one-month open-label phase revealed significant metabolic enhancements, prompting further investigation into the diet’s broader therapeutic effects.
The study enrolled participants with schizophrenia-spectrum or bipolar 1 disorders and followed a two-phase design. During the first month, those assigned to the ketogenic diet showed faster improvements in metabolic markers than those following their usual diets.
