Keto diet cuts liver fat by 67% in clinical trial
A recent clinical trial comparing three dietary approaches—ketogenic, Mediterranean, and low‑fat—found that the ketogenic diet produced superior improvements in several markers of metabolic health among participants with obesity, prediabetes and non‑alcoholic fatty liver disease. Over a four‑ to five‑month period, each group achieved an average weight loss of roughly 10 percent, but the keto group reduced liver fat by 67 percent, markedly higher than the 45‑percent reduction observed in the Mediterranean and low‑fat cohorts.
In addition to the pronounced decrease in hepatic fat, about 50 percent of individuals following the ketogenic regimen no longer met the clinical criteria for prediabetes by the end of the study, whereas the other groups showed smaller changes. The findings suggest that, for patients with combined obesity, insulin resistance and fatty liver, a low‑carbohydrate, high‑fat diet may offer more rapid metabolic benefits than traditional Mediterranean or low‑fat eating patterns, though longer‑term outcomes and safety remain to be evaluated.
