Kefalonia Wildfires Prompt Evacuations

Wildfires that broke out across the Greek island of Kefalonia and the western suburbs of Attica have forced mass evacuations, with authorities warning that strong winds are severely hampering firefighting efforts. The blaze, which began on the island’s western coast, has already scorched more than 1,200 hectares of forest and threatened several residential areas. In Attica, flames have spread through the pine forests that border the coastal towns of Sounio and Lavrion, prompting the evacuation of over 3,000 residents and the temporary closure of major roads.

Greek fire services, supported by military and volunteer units, are battling the fires under challenging conditions. High winds—reported at up to 60 kilometres per hour—have driven the flames across dry vegetation and have made aerial water drops less effective. Local authorities have deployed additional resources, including fire engines and helicopters, and have set up emergency shelters for displaced residents. The Ministry of Environment has urged residents to stay alert for changing weather conditions that could further fuel the fires.

The situation remains fluid, with officials continuing to monitor the spread of the blazes and the effectiveness of containment lines. While no fatalities have been reported to date, the threat to homes and infrastructure remains high, and the Greek government has called for international assistance if the fires intensify.
