JWST Rules Out Tiny Exomoons Around Exoplanet
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has already revolutionised our view of the cosmos, delivering unprecedented images of distant galaxies, star‑forming regions and exoplanet atmospheres. Yet, despite its powerful instruments and the high hopes of the scientific community, JWST has yet to detect an exomoon—a natural satellite orbiting an exoplanet in another star system.
Exomoons are still theoretical objects; their existence has never been confirmed, and they are expected to be faint and difficult to distinguish from their host planets. JWST was designed to probe exoplanetary atmospheres with high precision, and many researchers anticipated that its sensitivity could reveal the subtle signatures of moons transiting their planets. However, the data collected so far have not shown the expected transit timing variations or spectral features that would indicate a moon’s presence.
