Joshua Wong Pleads Guilty in Second Hong Kong National Security Law Case

Hong Kong‑born activist Michael Wong, who is already serving a prison term for an unrelated charge, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to a second offence under Beijing’s 2020 National Security Law. The court hearing revealed that the new charge carries a mandatory minimum addition of three years to his current sentence, with the possibility of life imprisonment if the court deems the offence severe enough.

Legal experts note that the 2020 law, imposed after the 2019 protests, criminalises acts of secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces, and has been used to impose lengthy terms on dissenters. Wong’s guilty plea means the judiciary will now determine the exact length of the extension, but the statutory range underscores the law’s capacity to impose harsh penalties on repeat offenders.
