Joe Riley: From Manchester United youth to new career after a decade

Ten years after lining up with Marcus Rashford for Manchester United, former youth player Joe Riley sat down with BBC Sport to discuss his new career and why he does not miss full‑time football. Riley, who joined United’s academy in the early 2010s, was part of the same cohort that included Rashford and went on to sign a professional contract with the club, although his first‑team opportunities were limited.

Riley now works in sports marketing, specialising in brand partnerships for clubs across Europe. In the interview he explained that a combination of a serious knee injury and a growing interest in business led him to pivot away from playing. “I realised that the long‑term prospects of a career in marketing were more stable than the uncertain nature of professional football,” he said. He added that the change has given him a broader perspective on the sport and a new set of challenges that keep him engaged, so he does not feel a strong longing for the full‑time game.

Riley’s story illustrates how former academy players can find success beyond the pitch. While he remains a supporter of United and follows the club’s progress, he is content with his current role and sees his transition as a natural progression rather than a missed opportunity.
