Jodrell Bank Observatory Threatened with Closure After Funding Cuts

The UK government’s decision to slash funding for the Jodrell Bank Observatory has triggered what scientists are calling a “blow to UK astronomy.” The deep‑space observatory, which houses the Grade I‑listed Lovell Telescope, forms the core of a world‑leading network of radio telescopes used to study galaxies, black holes, star formation, exoplanets and the cosmic microwave background. With the loss of financial support, the facility faces imminent closure, jeopardising ongoing research programmes that rely on its unique capabilities.

The Lovell Telescope and associated instruments have been instrumental in landmark discoveries and continue to attract international collaborations.
