Japan Plans Mission to Mars' Moons to Collect Samples
Japanese researchers have announced that they are finalising a Mars‑moon sample‑return mission aimed at the small satellites Phobos and Deimos. The project, led by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), intends to land a probe on one of the moons, collect surface material, and bring it back to Earth for detailed laboratory analysis. Scientists say the composition of these bodies—believed to be captured asteroids from the outer solar system—could hold clues to the early formation of the solar system and the delivery of organic compounds that may have seeded life on Earth.

Meanwhile, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) has revealed a competing mission that could launch earlier, potentially returning samples from Phobos or Deimos before Japan.
