James Stagg's Forecast Decided D-Day
In June 1944, meteorologist James Stagg delivered a forecast that many historians consider the most critical weather prediction of the Second World War. Stagg and his team at the Royal Air Force meteorological office analyzed atmospheric conditions to determine a suitable window for the Allied invasion of Normandy. The accuracy of the forecast was vital: over 150,000 Allied troops were poised to land on the French coast, and any miscalculation could have jeopardized the operation and extended the war in Europe.
The briefing took place in a room at Southwick House near Portsmouth, where General Dwight D. Eisenhower, commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force, awaited the meteorological assessment. The forecast’s precision allowed the Allies to schedule the invasion for the night of June 5th, with the main landings commencing at dawn on June 6th, now known as D‑Day.
