Israeli drone strike injures several in southwestern Syria

Syria’s foreign ministry issued a statement on Thursday condemning an attack that struck the southwestern part of the country. The strike, which occurred early on Tuesday, targeted a civilian area near the town of Jabal al‑Zahra, resulting in at least 12 deaths and injuring more than 30 residents. Syrian officials described the incident as a “flagrant violation of sovereignty” and a “blatant breach of international law,” citing the lack of any prior warning or justification for the assault.

The attack was attributed by Syrian authorities to forces operating from the neighboring country of Lebanon, an allegation that the Lebanese government has denied. The incident follows a series of cross‑border incidents in the region over the past year, many of which have been condemned by the United Nations as contraventions of the principles of non‑intervention and the protection of civilians. In its statement, the Syrian foreign ministry called for an immediate investigation and urged the international community to hold those responsible accountable under international legal norms.

In response to the attack, Syria has requested that the United Nations Security Council convene an emergency session to address the security situation in the southwestern provinces and to reaffirm the principle of state sovereignty. The government also urged regional partners to refrain from any further military actions that could destabilize the area and to respect the territorial integrity of Syria in accordance with international law.
