Isar Aerospace launches Europe's first fully commercial orbital rocket

Isar Aerospace, a German launch‑service provider, announced the successful deployment of its two‑stage Spectrum rocket into low‑Earth orbit from the Andøya Spaceport in Norway. The flight marks Europe’s first entirely commercial orbital launch, following a failed attempt in March when the vehicle crashed into the sea after 30 seconds of flight. The Spectrum, designed for payloads up to 500 kilograms, reached its intended orbit without incident, delivering its cargo for a mix of commercial and institutional customers.

CEO and co‑founder Daniel Metzler said in a press release that the achievement “opens space from Continental Europe” and provides “a true alternative for commercial and institutional customers” amid what he described as the “largest bottleneck” in the global space industry. The company’s success is expected to increase launch capacity for European users and reduce reliance on non‑European providers, signaling a shift toward a more diversified and accessible market for orbital services.
