Iran warns Ukraine of retaliation after Caspian Sea vessel attack

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Abbas Araghchi warned on Tuesday that the recent Ukrainian strike on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea “cannot go unanswered.” The incident, which occurred on Monday near the Turkmenistan border, involved a small cargo ship reportedly carrying oil products that was hit by a missile or drone launched from Ukrainian forces operating in the region. The attack left the vessel damaged, with no fatalities reported but several crew members requiring medical attention.

Araghchi said the assault violates international law and threatens the safety of navigation in the Caspian, a body of water shared by five littoral states. He added that Iran is consulting with its regional partners and will consider appropriate measures in response, while urging Ukraine to refrain from further actions that could destabilize the area. The statement comes amid heightened tensions over the broader conflict in Ukraine and Iran’s growing involvement in regional security matters.
