Iran to establish restricted zone around Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s security chief Mohsen Rezaei announced that Tehran will soon declare a restricted navigation zone around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most vital maritime chokepoints. The move, which is expected to be formalized in an official statement later this week, will limit the passage of commercial vessels through a defined corridor and will be enforced by Iranian naval and coast‑guard units. Rezaei said the restriction is intended to enhance Iran’s ability to monitor and control traffic in the narrow waterway amid what the government describes as escalating regional threats.

The Strait of Hormuz handles roughly a fifth of global oil shipments, and any limitation on its use can affect international energy markets and shipping routes. Iran has previously threatened to close the strait during periods of heightened tension with the United States and its allies, and the announcement follows a series of recent confrontations involving naval vessels and commercial ships in the area.
