Iran's water crisis stems from governance failures
Tehran has warned that the country’s escalating water shortage stems more from governance failures than from natural scarcity. Policy analysts note that irrigation accounts for roughly 90 % of Iran’s water use, yet many farms operate with outdated flood‑irrigation techniques despite government subsidies for modern drip systems. Simultaneously, urban expansion has increased demand for municipal supplies, while illegal well drilling and unregulated groundwater pumping have lowered aquifer levels by an estimated 30 % over the past two decades. In response, the cabinet has drafted a national water strategy that includes stricter licensing, higher tariffs for excessive consumption, and incentives for water‑saving technologies, aiming to align resource use with the country’s diminishing supply.
