Iran lists demands for US as Strait of Hormuz talks continue

The secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, presented the country’s principal demands to the United States during a meeting on Saturday, as Tehran and Oman continue talks to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The strait, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, has been closed or restricted amid regional tensions and U.S. sanctions.

Zolghadr outlined a set of conditions that Iran considers essential for any agreement, including the lifting of specific U.S. sanctions tied to its nuclear program, a guarantee of security for Iranian shipping, and a framework for resolving broader diplomatic disputes. The Iranian delegation emphasized that these demands are linked to the broader goal of restoring free navigation through the waterway, which currently accounts for a significant share of the world’s petroleum flow.

The negotiations remain in early stages, with both sides seeking to balance security concerns and economic interests. If a consensus can be reached, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz would ease pressure on global energy markets and potentially reduce regional instability.
