Iran conducts Gulf strikes as foreign minister visits Qatar to mourn former emir

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian Araghchi arrived in Doha on Tuesday to attend the mourning ceremonies for Qatar’s late Father Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who died on Monday at the age of 84. The delegation, which included senior officials from Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was received by Qatar’s Foreign Minister and members of the ruling Al Thani family. Araghchi laid a wreath at the Emir’s residence and expressed “deep condolences” on behalf of the Islamic Republic, emphasizing the long‑standing friendship and bilateral cooperation between the two neighboring states.

The visit underscores the diplomatic ties that have grown since the 2021 restoration of full relations, with both nations collaborating on trade, energy, and regional security issues. Qatar’s officials highlighted the Emir’s role in modernising the country and fostering a stable Gulf environment, while Iran’s statement reiterated its commitment to maintaining constructive dialogue with Qatar. The mourning period is expected to continue for several days, during which additional foreign representatives are scheduled to pay their respects.
