Iran claims new U.S. sanctions repeat previous measures

Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s deputy foreign minister for economic affairs, described the anticipated United States sanctions slated for announcement on Monday as “the same movie on repeat.” The sanctions, expected to target Iran’s missile development and related financing networks, follow a series of measures imposed by the Biden administration since early 2023 in response to Tehran’s alleged breaches of United Nations resolutions.

U.S. officials have indicated that the new restrictions will expand existing lists of individuals and entities, tighten export controls, and increase pressure on sectors deemed critical to Iran’s weapons programs. Iran’s foreign ministry has warned that the measures will further strain bilateral relations and exacerbate economic challenges, while urging the international community to oppose what it calls a pattern of punitive actions. The announcement is set to be made on Monday, with both sides preparing diplomatic statements ahead of the rollout.
