Iran and Oman Draft Waterway Deal Amid U.S. Blockade

Tehran and Muscat are negotiating a bilateral agreement that would allow the reopening of a key regional waterway through the establishment of shared shipping routes and the collection of service fees. The proposed framework aims to streamline maritime traffic, reduce transit times, and generate revenue for both governments, which have emphasized the economic benefits of restoring the corridor for commercial vessels.

The implementation of the draft accord, however, depends on the United States lifting its current blockade of the waterway. President Donald Trump has publicly rejected any arrangement that would grant Iran control over the passage or impose shipping tolls, stating that such conditions are unacceptable to Washington. Until the U.S. policy shifts, the agreement between Tehran and Muscat remains pending, leaving the future of the waterway’s reopening uncertain.
