iOS 27 adds iPhone Handoff to let two iPhones share one number

Apple’s upcoming iOS 27, slated for release later this month, will introduce “iPhone Handoff,” a feature that allows users to switch seamlessly between two iPhones that share the same phone number. The capability was first hinted at during the June WWDC keynote, and a new demonstration video now shows developers configuring the feature in Xcode 27’s Device Hub. The setup pairs a primary iPhone with a secondary “companion” device, enabling calls, messages and app continuity to be transferred instantly from one handset to the other.

The rollout of iPhone Handoff coincides with Apple’s anticipated launch of the foldable iPhone Ultra, a premium device that many users may find too bulky or costly to carry at all times. By allowing a more compact iPhone to act as a companion, the new feature offers a practical solution for maintaining connectivity without relying exclusively on the larger foldable model. Apple has not disclosed pricing or availability details for the companion functionality, but the demonstration suggests it will be integrated into the standard iOS 27 update and Xcode 27 development tools.
