IOM warns El Niño could worsen Venezuela earthquake displacement

Thousands of Venezuelans remain displaced three weeks after a series of devastating earthquakes that struck the country’s eastern regions, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) warned on Thursday. The tremors, which began in early March, caused widespread damage to homes and infrastructure, forcing residents to flee to temporary shelters and neighboring communities.

IOM officials added that the potential development of a strong El Niño climate pattern could exacerbate the humanitarian crisis. Warmer sea surface temperatures associated with El Niño are expected to increase rainfall and flooding in the area, heightening the risk of landslides and further displacement. The organization urged local authorities and international partners to strengthen early‑warning systems and disaster‑risk reduction measures to mitigate the impact of the impending weather event.

In light of these risks, IOM is coordinating with Venezuelan government agencies and non‑governmental organizations to monitor the situation and provide emergency assistance to those still living in precarious conditions. The organization calls for sustained support to ensure that displaced communities receive adequate shelter, food, and medical care amid the looming climatic threat.
