IOM delivers emergency aid as 75,000 displaced by Boko Haram in Chad's Lake Province

More than 75,000 people have been newly displaced in Chad’s Lake Province as Boko Haram attacks have intensified over recent months, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The surge in violence has forced residents of the islands on Lake Chad to abandon their homes and seek refuge in towns and villages farther from the lake’s shoreline.

The IOM is delivering emergency assistance to address the displaced population’s immediate needs, including food, shelter and medical care. The majority of those uprooted have moved inland, away from the island communities most affected by the insurgent activity. FRANCE 24’s Harold Girard reported that the displacement underscores the growing humanitarian challenge posed by the renewed Boko Haram threat in the region, prompting continued international support to mitigate the crisis.
