Insect-borne diseases in Brazil's Amazon linked to land use and rural economies
Diseases transmitted by insects across the Brazilian Amazon are not scattered haphazardly; they cluster into distinct regional patterns that correspond with variations in land use, rural economies and environmental change, researchers have found. The study, led by the Environmental Change Institute (ECI) at the University of Oxford, analyzed epidemiological data alongside satellite‑derived land‑cover maps and socioeconomic indicators to map the distribution of vector‑borne illnesses such as malaria, dengue, leishmaniasis and yellow fever throughout the basin.
The analysis revealed that areas undergoing rapid deforestation and agricultural expansion exhibited higher incidences of malaria and leishmaniasis, while regions dominated by extractive activities and low‑intensity farming showed elevated dengue transmission linked to urban‑rural migration. Conversely, zones with relatively intact forest cover and diversified small‑holder economies experienced fewer outbreaks overall. The authors conclude that integrating land‑use planning with public‑health strategies could mitigate disease risk, emphasizing the need for coordinated policies that address both environmental stewardship and rural development in the Amazon.
