Indonesia Battles Wildfires Fueled by El Nino

Thousands of firefighters and dozens of helicopters have been deployed to combat a surge of wildfires that have ignited across Indonesia’s islands, including Sumatra, Kalimantan and Sulawesi. Satellite data released by the National Disaster Management Authority shows that more than 1.2 million hectares of forest and peatland have been affected since the start of the month, prompting the evacuation of over 15,000 residents from high‑risk zones. The fires, fueled by prolonged dry conditions and strong winds, have generated thick haze that has reduced visibility in several major cities and raised air‑quality alerts in neighboring Malaysia and Singapore.

The Indonesian government has activated its emergency response plan, coordinating the effort through the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and the National Agency for Disaster Management. In addition to the domestic deployment, the country has requested assistance from regional partners, with Australia and Japan pledging additional aerial support and fire‑fighting equipment. Officials warn that containment will remain difficult as the dry season continues, but they remain confident that the combined ground and aerial resources will eventually curb the spread of the blazes and limit further environmental and health impacts.
