Indonesia 7.7‑magnitude earthquake kills 51 and displaces thousands

Indonesia is contending with one of its deadliest earthquakes in recent years after a magnitude‑7.2 tremor struck the northern coast of West Sulawesi on Tuesday. The quake, whose epicenter was recorded 15 km beneath the sea near the town of Majene, caused the collapse of several structures and triggered landslides that hampered rescue efforts. Official reports confirm that more than 1,300 homes have been damaged, while at least 27 people have been confirmed dead and 112 injured.

Government agencies and humanitarian groups have mobilised to assist the roughly 5,000 residents displaced by the disaster, establishing temporary shelters in schools and community centers. The National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) is coordinating the distribution of food, clean water, and medical supplies, and has appealed for additional support from international partners. As recovery operations continue, authorities are conducting safety inspections of damaged buildings and urging affected communities to remain vigilant for aftershocks.
