Indigenous Community Partners with NASA to Study Coastal Erosion in Maine
For the Pleasant Point Passamaquoddy Reservation, known as Sipayik, the ocean has long served as a vital source of knowledge and sustenance. Nestled along Passamaquoddy Bay in Downeast Maine, the Passamaquoddy people have historically relied on their intimate understanding of coastal ecosystems, guided by ancestral practices and observations of tides, seasonal changes, and marine life. Today, this deep-rooted connection to the sea is being integrated into scientific efforts to address contemporary environmental challenges.
In collaboration with the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI), the Passamaquoddy community is partnering on projects that merge traditional ecological knowledge with modern science.
