Indian Football Tournament Awards Goats as Trophies

Eastern India’s annual “Bengal Cup” football tournament introduced an unconventional reward this year, offering “GOAT” figurines as prizes rather than traditional trophies or cash awards. Organized by the West Bengal Sports Council and held from July 10 to 18 in Siliguri, the competition featured 12 regional clubs competing in a knockout format, with the winning team receiving a life‑size bronze sculpture of a goat—colloquially dubbed a “GOAT” in reference to the popular “Greatest of All Time” acronym.

Tournament officials explained that the goat figurines were chosen to symbolize resilience and perseverance, traits they associate with successful teams. The prize, crafted by local artisans, is intended to promote regional craftsmanship while adding a distinctive cultural element to the event. Participants and spectators alike noted the novelty of the award, which has drawn media attention and sparked discussions about alternative forms of recognition in Indian sports. The tournament concluded with Mohun Bagan Academy clinching the title and taking home the coveted GOAT, marking the first time the prize has been awarded in the competition’s 15‑year history.
