Indian Coast Guard launches rescue after cargo ship sinks in Bay of Bengal

The Indian Coast Guard announced that a fishing vessel found adrift off the coast of Gujarat had a crew of 24, comprising 20 Chinese nationals, three Myanmar nationals and one Bangladeshi. The vessel, which had been operating in the Arabian Sea, was reported missing after a distress signal was received on 12 August. Coast Guard ships and aircraft were dispatched to the coordinates and located the vessel approximately 30 nautical miles from the coast.

Upon arrival, the crew was taken aboard a Coast Guard cutter and provided with medical attention and basic necessities. The authorities confirmed that all 24 crew members were alive and in stable condition. The vessel was towed to the nearest port for inspection and the crew were later transferred to a hospital for further evaluation. The incident is under investigation to determine the cause of the vessel’s loss of control and whether any environmental or operational factors contributed to the emergency.

The Indian Coast Guard’s prompt response prevented a potential loss of life and highlighted the importance of international maritime cooperation. The crew’s safety remains the priority as authorities continue to assess the situation and work with the ship’s owners and flag state to address any regulatory or safety concerns.
