India sees surge in avocado demand

Demand for avocados in India has surged sharply over the past year, driven by rising consumer interest in health‑focused foods and an expanding middle‑class market. Imports of the fruit, which previously accounted for the bulk of supply, have risen by an estimated 30 percent, while domestic sales in supermarkets and online platforms have doubled, according to trade data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

Local growers are responding by expanding acreage and introducing higher‑yield varieties, aiming to capture a larger share of the fast‑growing market. Agricultural agencies are providing technical assistance and subsidised seedlings to support the shift, while exporters are adjusting logistics to meet domestic demand. Industry analysts project that, if current trends continue, home‑grown avocados could meet up to 60 percent of national consumption within the next three years, reducing reliance on imports and strengthening the domestic horticultural sector.
