India Aims to Reduce Strawberry Import Dependence
Indian strawberry growers across the country have long depended on high‑yield, disease‑resistant varieties brought in from the United States and Europe. These imports, shipped in bulk and distributed through a network of seed companies, have helped farmers meet the growing domestic demand for the fruit, especially in the high‑value markets of Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. However, the reliance on foreign varieties has exposed growers to supply‑chain disruptions, fluctuating import costs, and the risk of mismatched climate adaptation.
In recent months, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and several state agricultural universities have intensified breeding programmes aimed at developing locally adapted strawberry cultivars. Early‑season trials in the cooler climates of Himachal Pradesh and the humid conditions of Tamil Nadu have shown promising results, with new strains exhibiting improved frost tolerance and resistance to common fungal pathogens. Government subsidies for seed testing and a planned rollout of certified local varieties by 2025 could reduce import dependence and lower production costs for farmers.
If the domestic breeding efforts succeed, Indian strawberry farmers may soon be able to cultivate varieties that are better suited to local weather patterns and soil types, reducing the need for costly imports. Such a shift would not only enhance food security but also strengthen the country’s position as a self‑sufficient producer of the popular fruit.
