ICDs Benefit Younger Patients with Mild-Moderate Heart Dysfunction

A medical trial spanning more than ten years has produced results that could expand treatment options for patients with mild‑to‑moderate heart disease. The findings were presented on Friday by Professor Joseph Selvanayagam, an internationally recognised cardiac specialist from Adelaide’s Heart & Vascular at the European Society of Cardiology Congress (ESC 2026) in Munich, and have been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

The study, led by Professor Selvanayagam and his multidisciplinary team, evaluated the efficacy and safety of a novel therapeutic approach for individuals whose cardiac conditions are not severe enough to require invasive surgery but still carry significant risk. Data demonstrated improved clinical outcomes, including reduced hospitalisations and enhanced quality of life, suggesting the therapy could become a viable alternative to existing medical management. The publication in JAMA underscores the trial’s rigorous methodology and its potential impact on global cardiac care guidelines.
