Hungary Shuts Nuclear Plant as Danube Water Levels Hit Record Low
Prolonged drought and record‑high temperatures across Europe have pushed the continent into an energy crisis, prompting Hungary to shut down its only nuclear power plant for the first time in history. The decision came after water levels in the Danube fell to a record low, compromising the cooling capacity required for safe reactor operation.
Peter O’Brien, a senior engineer with the Hungarian Nuclear Regulatory Authority, explained that the plant relies on Danube water to maintain core temperatures below safe limits. “When the river’s flow drops below the minimum threshold, the risk of overheating rises sharply,” O’Brien said. The shutdown has forced Hungary to rely more heavily on fossil‑fuel plants and imports, raising concerns about carbon emissions and grid stability in a region already grappling with supply shortages.
