Hungarian President Signs Constitutional Amendment

President Tamás Sulyok signed the seventeenth amendment to Hungary’s Fundamental Law on Saturday, announcing the act on his Facebook page. The amendment will become effective immediately upon signing and, according to the text, will bring the sitting president’s mandate to an end the day after it takes effect.

The Fundamental Law, Hungary’s constitution, has been amended 16 times since its adoption. This latest change, the seventeenth amendment, is the final constitutional modification to be enacted during President Sulyok’s term. The amendment’s timing means that the president’s official duties will conclude the following day, marking the end of his tenure.

With the amendment now in force, the presidency will transition to its successor the next day, concluding President Sulyok’s mandate and ushering in a new chapter in Hungary’s constitutional governance.
