Hundreds evacuated by boat from Greek village as wildfires spread across Europe

Around 500 individuals, the majority of whom were tourists, were rescued by boat from the coastal village of Agios Vasileios after becoming trapped by rising waters. The emergency operation was launched early Saturday morning when local authorities received reports that a sudden surge in sea level had cut off the main road, leaving the visitors stranded with limited access to land transport.

Coordinated by the regional coast guard and supported by municipal emergency services, the vessels shuttled the crowd to safety without incident, and no injuries have been reported. Officials said the evacuation is now complete and that assessments are underway to determine the cause of the rapid water rise and to restore normal access to the area.
