Human Rights Expert Warns Toxic Waste Management Threatens Rights

The United Nations Human Rights Council heard a stark warning on Monday from the council’s newly appointed independent expert on the human rights implications of toxic chemicals and hazardous waste. The expert asserted that “poor management of toxic chemicals and hazardous waste threatens many, if not all, human rights,” emphasizing the breadth of the risk to civil, economic, social and cultural rights worldwide.

In his address, the expert highlighted a surge in incidents of chemical spills, illegal dumping and inadequate disposal practices that have escalated exposure to hazardous substances in both urban and rural communities. He called for strengthened international standards, transparent reporting mechanisms and coordinated national responses to mitigate the health, environmental and socioeconomic harms linked to mismanaged waste. The council pledged to consider the expert’s recommendations in its upcoming review of global chemical safety frameworks, signaling a potential push for more rigorous oversight and accountability measures.
