Houthis seize Hanish archipelago, expanding Red Sea island control

The Hanish archipelago fell on Saturday after hundreds of forces loyal to Yemen’s internationally recognised government withdrew, extending Houthi control to the strategic islands of Mokha and Perim. The rapid advance came amid intense fighting that began two weeks ago, prompting the United Nations to report that more than 80,000 people have been displaced from their homes across the region.

The government, based in Aden, has pledged to regroup and launch a counter‑offensive, while humanitarian agencies warn that the displacement crisis is worsening as civilians flee the expanding front lines.
