Hospitalized Pet Owners Face Care Barriers, Study Finds

A new perspective paper in the *New England Journal of Medicine* highlights how the strong bond between people and their pets can interfere with timely medical care. The authors note that pet owners often delay or forgo treatment, or leave a hospital against medical advice, when they have no reliable caregiver for their animal at home.

The paper, written by an Emory University physician and an Ohio State University veterinarian, explains that the emotional attachment to a pet can outweigh the perceived benefits of a hospital stay. It argues that hospitals need to adopt different approaches—such as pet‑friendly accommodations, on‑site pet care services, or coordinated community resources—to support patients who must keep their animals with them.

By calling for policies that recognize the unique needs of pet‑bearing patients, the authors suggest that hospitals can reduce the risk of patients leaving prematurely and improve overall health outcomes for both people and their companion animals.
