Higher vitamin B12 levels in both parents associated with a lower risk of birth defects
A new prospective cohort study has identified protective associations between parental vitamin B12 levels before conception and maternal red blood cell (RBC) folate concentrations after conception with the risk of birth defects. Researchers measured these nutrients in a large sample of couples and followed the pregnancies to assess congenital anomalies. The analysis showed that higher preconception vitamin B12 in parents, as well as elevated maternal RBC folate during early pregnancy, correlated with a statistically significant reduction in birth defect incidence.
The investigators controlled for potential confounders such as maternal age, socioeconomic status, and smoking habits, strengthening the evidence that these micronutrients play a role in fetal development. The findings suggest that adequate vitamin B12 intake before conception and maintaining sufficient folate stores after conception may be important strategies for reducing the likelihood of congenital malformations. These results add to the growing body of literature supporting the benefits of balanced prenatal nutrition.
Public health agencies may consider these insights when designing preconception and prenatal care programs. Ensuring that prospective parents receive guidance on vitamin B12 supplementation and folate-rich diets could help lower birth defect rates, complementing existing folic acid recommendations aimed at preventing neural tube defects.
