A multicenter, randomized clinical trial conducted by researchers from the Pain Outcomes Lab at Wake Forest University School of Medicine has demonstrated that high‑frequency spinal cord stimulation (HF‑SCS) can significantly alleviate pain and enhance sensory function in patients with treatment‑resistant painful diabetic neuropathy. The study, which enrolled participants across several clinical sites, compared HF‑SCS therapy with standard care and measured outcomes using validated pain scales and sensory testing protocols.
Results indicated a marked reduction in reported pain intensity and notable improvements in tactile and vibration perception among those receiving HF‑SCS. In addition to clinical symptom relief, investigators observed early evidence of increased density of small nerve fibers in skin biopsies taken from a subset of participants, suggesting a potential regenerative effect of the therapy.
