Hepatitis E: The underestimated risk in liver cirrhosis

A study conducted at the Hannover Medical School has shed light on the risks associated with hepatitis E virus (HEV) infections, particularly for individuals with preexisting liver damage. According to the research, HEV infections are the leading cause of acute viral hepatitis worldwide, often resolving on their own in healthy individuals. However, for those with compromised liver health, these infections can have severe consequences, including a significant risk of acute liver failure. In fact, the study found that in half of all cases of liver cirrhosis, HEV infections were the primary cause of acute liver failure.

The researchers at the Hannover Medical School are sounding the alarm on the underdiagnosis of HEV infections. Despite their prevalence, many cases go undetected, hindering timely treatment and effective management of the condition. To combat this issue, the researchers are advocating for increased awareness among medical staff about the risks and symptoms of HEV infections. Furthermore, they are calling for more routine testing to detect the infections and bring them under control with antiviral therapies.

The findings of this study highlight the importance of vigilance in diagnosing and treating HEV infections, particularly in high-risk populations. By raising awareness and promoting routine testing, medical professionals can better identify and manage these infections, ultimately improving patient outcomes and reducing the risk of severe liver complications.
