Heatwave worsens firefighting conditions in France's southwest

The wildfire in the Gironde department of southwestern France remains largely contained, but authorities remain on high alert as a new wave of scorching temperatures sweeps the country. After a brief period of stabilization, the heat has prompted a surge in fire incidents, with 14 new outbreaks recorded on July 28 as previously scorched ground reignited. Firefighters were dispatched rapidly to the affected areas, underscoring the continued risk posed by the hot, dry conditions.

The blaze has consumed approximately 42,000 hectares and forced the evacuation of more than 220,000 people, including 57,000 residents from towns outside Bordeaux who were displaced overnight.
