Hannah Fry awarded 2026 Leelavati Prize for math outreach

Professor Hannah Fry, a mathematician at University College London, has been awarded the 2024 Leelavati Prize by the International Mathematical Union (IMU). The prize, presented at the International Congress of Mathematicians, recognises outstanding contributions to public outreach and communication of mathematics. Fry was honoured for her extensive work in making mathematical concepts accessible through popular books, television programmes, podcasts and public lectures, which have reached audiences worldwide.

The Leelavati Prize, named after the 12th‑century Indian mathematician Bhāskara II’s celebrated work, includes a medal and a cash award of $5,000. Fry joins a distinguished list of previous laureates who have demonstrated excellence in engaging the public with mathematics. The award highlights the growing importance of science communication and underscores Fry’s role in inspiring broader interest in the discipline.
