Hampshire wins £1m damages from ECB over 2023 Ashes venue decision

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has agreed to pay Hampshire County Cricket Club £1 million in damages after a court ruling found the board had acted unfairly in allocating the 2023 Ashes venues. Hampshire had sought to host a Test match at its County Ground, but the ECB chose Headingley in Leeds for the series’ final game, a decision that the county challenged as a breach of its contractual rights.

In the legal action, Hampshire argued that the ECB’s selection process was opaque and that the county had been denied a fair opportunity to bid for a venue. The court sided with the club, awarding £1 million in compensation and highlighting the need for transparent venue‑allocation procedures. The ruling also explains why there will be no Ashes fixture in the north of England next summer, as the decision to award Headingley left the region without a Test match in the 2024 series.
