Hamas Dissolves Government, Plans Technocratic Transfer

Hamas announced this week that it had dissolved its de facto governing authority in the Gaza Strip and expressed readiness to transfer power to a technocratic committee appointed by the so‑called “Board of Peace” led by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Israeli officials dismissed the declaration as a political stunt, noting that the Israeli Defense Forces have continued air operations in Gaza despite a nominal ceasefire and now control more than 60 percent of the enclave’s territory. The proposed technocratic body, however, remains outside Gaza and has not yet assumed any administrative functions on the ground.

The juxtaposition of Hamas’s announced withdrawal, Israel’s ongoing military campaign, and the absence of the technocratic committee from the territory raises questions about effective governance in Gaza. While Hamas claims it will cede authority, the Israeli military’s continued presence and control over a majority of the area suggest that security decisions remain largely in the hands of Israel. At present, no clear administrative structure has been established within Gaza, leaving the question of who truly governs the enclave unresolved.
