Guatemala Volcano Fuego Erupts, Red Alert Issued for 1.6 Million Residents

Guatemala has issued a red alert – the highest level of danger warning – for regions impacted by the recent eruption of the Fuego volcano, situated roughly 35 kilometers from the capital. The alert, announced by national authorities, covers the departments of Sacatepéquez, Chimaltenango and Escuintla, which together house about 1.6 million residents. The declaration follows a series of explosive events that have produced ash plumes, pyroclastic flows and lahars, prompting widespread evacuations and emergency response efforts.

The Fuego eruption has intensified in the past weeks, with satellite imagery and ground-based monitoring indicating ongoing activity. Officials have urged people in the affected departments to heed evacuation orders, avoid low‑lying areas, and stay informed through official channels. Emergency services are coordinating with local governments to provide shelters, medical care and logistical support to displaced communities.

In response to the heightened risk, the Guatemalan government has mobilized additional resources, including air support for aerial surveys and firefighting units to manage secondary hazards such as landslides.
