Guam Prepares for Super Typhoon Bavi

Late Sunday, the islands of Guam and the Northern Marianas were struck by howling winds and lashing rains as Super Typhoon Bavi approached the region. The storm, which the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) has classified as a super typhoon, is expected to bring winds equivalent to a Category‑5 hurricane across the U.S. Pacific territories.

According to the JTWC, Bavi will move westward over the islands early Monday, with maximum sustained winds projected at up to 280 km h⁻¹ (173 mph) and gusts reaching 333 km h⁻¹ (207 mph). The typhoon’s path and intensity have prompted the issuance of severe weather advisories, and local authorities have urged residents to secure property, avoid unnecessary travel, and heed evacuation orders where issued.

Emergency services on Guam and the Northern Marianas are on high alert, with shelters prepared and communication lines maintained. Residents are advised to stay indoors, keep windows and doors closed, and monitor official updates for any changes to the storm’s trajectory or intensity.
