Greenland to Set Up Truth Commission on Forced Contraception

Greenland’s government announced on Friday that it will establish a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate a decades‑long campaign of forced contraception carried out by Danish authorities between the 1960s and 1990. The commission is tasked with uncovering the extent of the program, which involved the insertion of intrauterine devices and the administration of contraceptive injections to thousands of Indigenous women and girls without their consent, and with documenting the impact on affected communities.

The move follows a prolonged scholarly debate in which experts have not reached consensus on whether the forced‑birth control measures constitute genocide. By creating the commission, Greenland aims to provide a formal record of the abuses, offer a platform for survivors to share their experiences, and inform future policy. The government said the findings will be used to promote healing and guide reconciliation efforts between Greenland and Denmark.
