Greenland Expedition Studies Rapid Ice Melt

A scientific expedition is underway in Greenland to examine the island’s rapidly melting ice. Researchers from several universities and research institutes have assembled at a coastal research station, where they will spend six weeks collecting data on glacier retreat and its potential impact on ocean circulation.

The team is focused on determining whether the loss of Greenland’s glaciers could disrupt the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, a major current system that helps regulate Europe’s climate. By deploying temperature, salinity, and current sensors, and conducting ice core analyses, the scientists aim to quantify changes in water density and flow that could alter the strength and stability of this oceanic conveyor belt.
