Google Plans to Release 32 Million Sterile Mosquitoes in U.S.
Alphabet’s “Debug” project has requested federal approval to release up to 32 million sterilised male mosquitoes in California and Florida. The company’s goal is to curb local mosquito populations by introducing millions of males that cannot reproduce. Because male mosquitoes neither bite nor transmit disease, the strategy relies on them mating with wild females; the resulting eggs are infertile, which should reduce the overall number of mosquitoes.
The plan follows earlier trials in other countries that have shown sterilised‑male releases can lower mosquito densities and, by extension, the incidence of mosquito‑borne illnesses such as dengue and Zika. Alphabet’s proposal includes monitoring protocols to assess population changes and environmental impacts. If the federal government grants permission, the company would begin phased releases in the targeted states, with the expectation that a sustained reduction in mosquito numbers could lessen the spread of disease‑carrying species.
