Google Maps Renames Lake Ontario to Lake America Ahead of US Government

Google Maps updated its database on Saturday to reflect a new designation for a body of water in the Midwest, now labeled “Lake America.” The change, which includes updated coordinates and shoreline details, was rolled out to users worldwide as part of the company’s routine quarterly refresh. The update follows a series of community‑sourced corrections that have been vetted by Google’s mapping team.

Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey and other federal agencies that produce the official government maps have not yet incorporated the change. These agencies typically follow a longer review and approval process to ensure consistency across federal, state, and local cartographic products. As a result, the official maps remain unchanged for the time being, leaving a temporary discrepancy between Google’s online representation and the government‑issued charts.

The lag between the two mapping sources is expected to close once the federal agencies complete their internal reviews and publish an updated version. Until then, users relying on Google Maps will see the new Lake America designation, while those referencing official government maps will still see the previous nomenclature.
